Residential Electrician – What Does It Involve?
What is the main difference between an Electrician and a Residential Electrician? While residential electricians mainly deal with electrical systems and installing, repairing, and maintaining the electrical wiring in residential properties, the kind of work an Electrician does is very different. Residential Electricians are skilled electrical engineers and skilled plumbers, HVAC technicians, and insulating engineers. They also know about building construction. All these skills and qualifications make Electrician qualified for residential electrical work.
An excellent example of an Electrician is a Boiler Maker or Electric Boiler Repairman. Boiler Maker or Electric Boiler Repairman usually works on Commercial boilers and circulates water to various industries. Electricians on the other hand are well versed with all aspects of wiring systems and can do all kinds of maintenance jobs on electrical equipments. They normally maintain or repair the various electrical components of appliances like televisions, computers, and fridges. They can even do some preventive maintenance if the appliances come with a manual setting.
There are two types of Electricians namely; general and residential. General Electric, or GE as it is popularly known, is one of the largest and oldest industrial companies in the world. All its divisions like; heating and cooling, industrial & domestic, power generation, ventilation, steam & diesel generators are wholly developed by GE. As it is a part of the larger organisation, all its electrician have undergone thorough training from the master electricians to gain the required qualification to become a part of this big family of companies. The master electricians are highly skilled technicians who have gained a high school diploma and have been assigned a particular role which they are supposed to carry out diligently until they are fully experienced. The role of a master electrician varies from a simple installation to full scale modifications of electrical equipments.
Residential electrician works on residential areas and has specialized training to deal with the problems that can be faced with electrical systems. The main reasons why there are many people demanding a residential electrician is because many houses have faulty electrical systems. Normally, houses need fewer electricians than businesses because homes don’t have complicated electrical systems and usually don’t require the installation of complex wiring. But when it comes to businesses, installing complicated wiring system and maintaining electrical systems is quite a task. Thus the demand for residential electrician is higher than normal.
Residential electrician works on different voltage levels. He or she must know about different voltage standards to ensure proper and safe usage. To make sure that the electrical wiring system is maintained properly and the circuit is not damaged due to excessive or sudden voltage changes, residential electrician uses different measuring equipment and instruments for detecting the voltage level changes. He or she makes use of Ohm’s law to measure the resistance of circuits and also measures the frequency level of conductors’ electrical current.
A residential electrician’s main job is to ensure the safety and efficiency of the circuits in homes and offices. Residential electrician’s main activities include installing the wiring for electricity and lighting in homes and offices; installing and repairing the electrical equipments like, lights, lighting fixtures, fans, and various electrical appliances. The residential electrician also ensures that proper ventilation and air circulation is provided in commercial settings. He or she also ensures that the wiring of the building is done properly and fixed properly. Commercial electrician ensures that the building is safe for the workers and customers alike; fixing the ceiling fan in the place where it should not be; replacing broken lamps; providing proper ventilation system; etc.
There are a lot of electrical systems that are being installed in new buildings. This is the reason why residential electrician is required for doing the installation work of these electrical systems. Before these electrical systems are installed, the contractors ask for recommendations from the experts in the field. These recommendations are then taken into consideration when the contractors start working on the construction of the new buildings. After the completion of the construction work, then these electricians correct any mistakes and re-install the wiring of the electrical systems properly.
Even after completion of new construction, there are still a lot of things that need to be done. There are many things that residential electrician does like making sure that there are no leaks in the water lines, testing the air conditioners; inspecting the air ducts; checking the wiring of the HVAC units; etc. After the completion of all these tasks, then the newly installed residential electrician checks the certification of the HVAC units from the HVAC association. If all these checks are done properly then there are no major issues to worry about. But before getting into this line of work, it is important that you have to fulfill the education and training requirements for working as an electrician.
